Yokozuna are a London three piece who are influenced by Fugazi, Sonic Youth and Bloody Butchers, amongst others. The band is made up of Chris, Phil and Russell, their individual responsibilities-and it's them that I quote on this-are; ‘Russell - Arms and Legs, Phil - Thud and boom/support shouting, Chris - Twang and strum/main hollerin'. So there you have it ladies and gents.
I wasn't expecting to like them initially because of their name. (Of course, I'm not bothered when an actual Japanese band has a Japanese name...it's just one of those pedantic things of mine I guess.) but luckily, this band-like all good bands should-let their music do the talking and it has lots to say. I loved the opening of ‘Architecture' no faffing about, just straight on in there, all guns blazing, like a pushy drunkard, reeling about noisily all over the place. I think the levels could have done with adjusting, as the vocals are a bit too quiet for my liking, which is a shame as they sound pretty good...I particularly like the synth-y almost goth, laid back effect and style on the chorus. On the flip side, the erratic guitar is another plus point-you know me-I love it when a band or a musician sound like they're having a fit. Another component to my personal view of the alchemy of a song is a little bass only section, coupled with a nice drum build up, while the geetar jangles discordantly in the background. Basically, this ticks a LOT of my boxes. They've played with Cherry But No Cake, Sky:Lark!, Bo Ningen, The Contortionists and Niyan to name but a few. Be sure to catch them live and wrestle a tune or two out of them soon! Listen to 'Architecture'
