Review: Killola - Wa Da We Da
Saturday, 21 June 2008

If you asked me to sum up Wa Da We Da by Killola in one sentence I'd say it sounded like Patti Smith fucking KatieJane Garside. I know I'm not struck on Patti or Katie, but sling them together and it works. It's catchier than herpes, I'm already singing along with more enthusiasm than one of the delusional mentalists from ‘Pop Idol'.

Whilst checking out other Killola songs, I've noticed Lunachicks-esque influences (face it-that alone means they're onto a winner) as well as a very Anita Ward sounding sample in ‘This Isn't a Love Song' and a blinding Gene Vincent/50's vibe on UcantSEEmeCUZimAstalker Usually (and ironically) I'm sceptical of ‘real' bands with female vocalists-I generally think men do it better (men have their good points!) but I'm loving Killola.

The LA four piece-who were discovered by Gloria Butler (Geezer's Mrs, no less) have been described as Blondie on crack (Blondie WERE on crack...weren't they?!) but they piss on Blondie frankly. Vocalist Lisa Rieffel, Mike Ball, (guitar), Dan Grody (drums) and Johnny Dunn (bass) got together and formed Killola in 2003 and released "Louder, Louder!" their first album in January 2006. Their second album I Am The Messer which was released in April 2008 was on CD format, they also had the rather nifty idea of putting it onto limited edition flash drive bracelets that were preloaded with several videos as well as their album.

As well as their Myspace page, you can check out Lisa and Johnny live on Monday nights at 8PM (PST) on Spread Radio Live (founded by Dave Navarro fact fans!). Another interesting fact is that all fans with Killola tattoos are allowed into the band's shows for free, for life. Nice. Miss ‘em miss out kidlings!
