Review: Dirty Fingernails - Misery is Easy

Don't panic, this band aren't long haired snaggle toothed alt rockers gone metal, as the name Dirty Fingernails might imply, (well that's what I had imagined anyway!) Misery is Easy was a very pleasant surprise indeed. They should be called something more like Lo-Fi Lollipop Kids. As there sound is a sweet mix of bouncy melodies, interestingly thoughtful lyrics, and the right amount of lo-fi to give it an edge without making it sound as if it were recorded in a cardboard box.

Misery is easy has the dirty electro feel of the synth soaked side of the 80’s, with the intelligence of Interpol, and the youthful catchiness of Operator Please.

This hip brother and sister act hailing from Finland have certainly brought a taste of something new to the musical table. Misery is easy has the dirty electro feel of the synth soaked side of the 80's, with the intelligence of Interpol, and the youthful catchiness of Operator Please. "Misery is easy and so is depression, but I ain't gonna tell you you're wrong," is the opening line and leads the listener into a false sense of security. Thinking you are going to be able to wallow in your own self pity for the duration of this song is the wrong attitude. The jaunty keyboard gives this track a sense of innocence, mixed with the tragically dark lyrics and anguished cry half way through the Dirty Fingernails have created quite the paradox. The guitars have plenty of feedback, and towards the end there's a hauntingly eerie carnival-esq. tune mixed into the background, all turning this into quite the scarily merry number.

This band has fallen into the music scene somewhere between the electro dance feel of Daft Punk and the new wave scenester sound of MGMT. The only difference is they have made their sound one that is accesable to people with a vast range of musical taste.

The duo is now London based and living in Finsbury Park, as their demo title explains, Greetings from Finsbury Park, N4. Getting rave reviews across the music scene it seems people are enjoying their electro carnival indie pop.
